About Us

Who are we?

The ‘Mission of Mercy’ was launched by Joseph A. Grima on the 12th of October 1997. It was something that Mr. Grima wanted to do a long time ago as he witnessed for many years the injustices, cruelty, hunger, abuse and lack of care for underprivileged children around the world – he experienced all this as a child. His time in the Royal Navy bore witness to all this for around 13 years. The opportunity to do something came when Joseph returned to his place of birth, Malta. The mission was launched on his 50th birthday 10 months after he landed in Malta.

Where are we?

We have our office in Iklin, Malta. Our committee consists of five.

How are we funded?

Initially funds came from Malta, U.K. and Holland. To-day all funds come from Malta and the U.K., late 2008 some funds came from Brazil. The Council of Sabara. Minas Gerais assist with some workers and a monthly allowance of catering.

Are we registered?

Yes, we are currently registering in Malta and up to ‘State Level’ in Brazil. In the next two years we should be on full ‘Federal’ registration in Brazil.

We are currently looking after 200 children in the ‘shanty town’ of Nossa Senhora de Fatima. Sabara. Minas Gerais. Brazil. We have a nursery, kindergarten, a half-way house, pre-school, home-work assistance, dancing, acting, singing and 2 bible studies every week. We are shortly starting music and computer studies.

What about our workers?

All the Maltese and British helpers are volunteers and our 22 workers in Brazil are paid a minimum wage apart from the management who are on a higher salary. These are all paid by the mission the rest 6/8 workers are paid by the local Council.
